Don’t Miss These 6 Signs You Need An Oil Change

Refueling and pouring oil quality into the engine motor car Transmission and Maintenance Gear

Although you know that your car can go thousands of miles between oil changes, how do you really know if it’s time for an oil change? Look for these six signs!

Strange Engine Noises

Because motor oil lubricates the entire engine, it may start to make noises that you haven’t heard before. Newer cars are sometimes designed to make noises to alert you that something is off and needs attention.  You might hear rustling, knocking, grinding, or even over-the-top roaring if the oil is low.

You Notice a Burning Smell

When motor oil is old and dirty, it can’t lubricate or cool the engine properly. When this happens, you may notice an acrid burning smell that can be smelled from the cabin and outside the car. While this could also be a symptom of an oil leak, it could also be a symptom of old or low oil. Either way, it’s a good idea to bring your car in for an inspection.

The Oil Consistency is Different

When oil is old and dirty, the consistency will change. Fresh oil is translucent, golden, and viscous. Motor oil that’s been used for a while will be darker, but as long as it still flows easily it’s OK. However, if the oil is thick, gritty, or sludgy, it’s past its prime and needs to be changed as soon as you can swing by for an appointment.

The Level is Low

An obvious sign that you need an oil change is a low oil level. If you pop the hood, take out the dipstick, and notice that the oil hits lower than the lowest marker, your car doesn’t have enough oil and needs an oil change asap.

The Dash Light is On

If the oil lamp sign is illuminated on your dashboard, it’s another clear sign that you need an oil change. This light can also indicate that the oil pressure is low, which can indicate a larger issue. Be sure to bring your car in for an inspection when this light is on.

You’re Over the Mileage or Time

Finally, if you look up at your windshield and notice that the sticker from your last oil change indicates that you’ve surpassed the mileage or time period specified by your technician, it’s time to schedule an oil change!
