There’s no need to hire a nanny for your next outing, as Mary Poppins will be lading at the Public Theater of San Antonio this fall! You can bring the whole family to see this live musical adaptation of a beloved children’s tale.
When and Where
The show will run at the Public Theater of San Antonio from Thursday, September 13 until Sunday, October 13. Performances generally start at 7:30 p.m., aside from the Sunday matinees which start at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $20 to $45 on regular nights, and you can order yours HERE. Made for the Stage
The 1960s Disney songs were an obvious choice for a theatrical performance, and in 2004, producer Cameron Mackintosh made a great idea a reality. After securing the rights to use Disney’s songs, his team brought on songwriters Anthony Drewe and George Stiles to craft additional songs and prepare the material for a live treatment. Rather than simply adapt the film itself to the stage, the writers referred to the original books by P.L. Travers. As a result, fans of the film may notice a few unique elements, including the Neleus character, who was omitted from the movie. Michael and June are also a bit more unruly in the play, and the “Spoonful of Sugar” sequence now occurs after they’ve made a total mess of the kitchen.

The film Mary Poppins is one of Disney’s most recognizable musicals, with songs like “Spoonful of Sugar” delighting fans for generations. However, the film that was already brimming with tunes was originally intended to have even more musical numbers. In fact, over 30 additional songs were drafted, then dropped from the soundtrack. While many songs were simply cut for time, the writers were able to pull lines from the lyrics to work into the dialogue. Other deleted songs were repurposed as melodies and motifs. The melody heard whenever Admiral Boom appears was once its own musical number. A separate track titled “The Pearly Song” was incorporated into “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”
Some deleted songs pop up in other Disney productions, such as “The Right Side,” which was originally intended to be sung as Michael woke up in an ill temper. The song was later repurposed for the TV show Welcome to Pooh Corner. The slow-tempo “Land of Sand” was reworked for The Jungle Book as the hypnotic “Trust in Me,” sung by Kaa the snake.
