Homemade ice cream is a great sweet treat for a hot day! But the thought of spending hours tending an ice cream machine can be daunting. Thankfully, we found this simple recipe for homemade ice cream that requires very little time and even less effort. Give it a try today!

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup half and half
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3 cups ice
  • 1/3 cup kosher salt
  • Toppings of your choice

How to Prepare:

Start by combining the half and half, sugar, and vanilla in a small resealable plastic bag. Press out any excess air and seal the bag tightly.

Add ice and salt to a larger resealable bag. Place the smaller bag with the ice cream ingredients inside the bigger bag. Shake vigorously for up to 10 minutes or until the ice cream has hardened. (At least one reviewer accomplished this by jumping on the trampoline with their bag of ice cream, which isn’t the worst idea we’ve ever heard of.)

If you’d like a thicker consistency, you can also place the ice cream mixture in the freezer for a few minutes after it’s been shaken well.

Next comes the fun part! Once you’ve made your ice cream, it’s time to add the toppings. Garnish your frozen treat with your favorite flavors. We love it with crumbled Oreos, fresh fruit, or chocolate syrup.

Note, this recipe is for a single serving of ice cream. So you’ll want to double, triple, or quadruple it depending on the number of people you’re serving.

To change up the flavor, you can choose different extracts or add flavored syrups before the mixing process. If you’re making it for a crowd, consider starting with the same ice cream base and letting each individual customize the flavor to his or her taste.

You can also make a DIY ice cream bar by setting out a variety of toppings. Chopped nuts, chocolate chips, M&Ms, and colored sprinkles are always well received. And don’t forget the whipped cream and cherries!
