History

The Witte Museum inspires people to shape the future of Texas through transformative experiences. Botanist and high school teacher, Ellen Schultz Quillin, started the museum for the growing city of San Antonio in 1923. The museum grew rapidly through the 1920s and 1930s with many additions of paintings and historical artifacts. The collection additions included some of the most important pieces in the now vast Witte holdings. The Witte Museum has acquired so many exquisite pieces that tie in the natural and historical history of Texas to the museum.

Explore

At The Witte Museum, there are hundreds of different things for visitors to enjoy. The McLean Family Texas Wild Gallery features beloved dioramas of the flora and fauna of the wild Texas landscape. The Robert J. & Helen C Kleberg South Texas Heritage Center hosts a remarkable collection of Texas artifacts. These are just a sampling of what you can find waiting for you at The Witte Museum.
