Beauty From Rocks
The spot that is now the Japanese Tea Garden used to be a rock quarry, and the rocks were used for various San Antonio buildings. That includes the historic Menger Hotel. Around 1917, City Parks Commissioner Ray Lambert realized the land was perfect for an oriental-style garden and quickly created a plan. The property was shaped into walkways, a Japanese pavilion, stone arch bridges, and other features. An artist even lent a hand and created a Japanese Torii gate.
The garden hosted countless people for years but was eventually neglected. After an extensive renovation that began in 2005, the garden is more beautiful than ever.
Visiting the Japanese Tea Garden
You’ll experience a sense of peace as soon as you enter the Japanese Tea Garden. You’ll cross through the gorgeous Japanese-style gate and then climb the steps to make your way to the Pavilion. This imposing structure has stone columns and a thatched roof and is a popular spot for weddings. The view from the Pavilion is as stunning as the building itself. You can see the waterfall and the ponds from your place at the Pavilion. Take a minute to admire the view before moving on.
Then you can head to the trail that takes you around the ponds and through the garden. Move your gaze toward the water, where you will see koi fish swimming. You might even see a turtle during your stroll.
As you walk around the different paths, you will also be greeted by beautiful plants and flowers. Close your eyes and take in the scents. Then continue to meander along the pathways until you come to the waterfall.
This is the highlight of the garden. Like the Pavilion, the waterfall can be rented for weddings. You don’t have to say, “I do” to enjoy the waterfall, though. If you want to get up close, it’s wise to go early. Since it’s so popular, it can get crowded. By going first, you can beat the crowds and take the perfect photo.
